Ferdinand Uses the Potty is a tale about a little frog going through a phase where all little kids have to go through – potty training. Ferdinand felt angry yet mystified by the whole episode when he wet his bed. Then his friend, a human boy, explained to him that every kid has to go through this phase thus there is nothing Ferdinand should feel angry or fear about. It was the most natural thing to happen.

The boy showed Ferdinand the toilet bowl and told him to go there each time he finishes his meals. However, Ferdinand has this huge aversion to toilet bowls as he hates the loud ‘Whoosh’ sound that came out of it whenever it flushes. Therefore, he tried to ‘hold it’ all day long thinking that he could get away from using it. Then the pain in his tummy proved to be too painful and it hurts Ferdinand so much that he has no choice but to go to the toilet bowl else he will be ‘wet’ again. And so, Ferdinand overcame his fear and successfully uses the toilet bowl.

My soon to be 5 years old toddler who was potty-trained when he was about 2 years old asked me ‘Mommy, how come frog sleep on the bed? Frog can shee-shee (pee)?’ Well, I have a little tough time answering that! However, it is still fun to read this book together with him as when we read along, he asked me quite a number of questions which were rather amusing.

This book which the author had written in a rhyming prose using a little frog as a main character talking about bed wetting did not attempt to explain the basic concepts of potty training in details as there were no other explanations included in the book to better illustrate the idea of potty training. Confusions could arise when reading it to a small kid who already understood the differences between human and animals.

Generally, this book is a good start for those who wants to try to potty train their little kids. The story which is short and filled with colorful illustrations is perfect to hold a toddler’s short attention span.
