Penang Butterfly Farm

14.7.2008 – A back dated post…

On the 14th Of July was a replacement holiday for The Penang Governor’s Birthday. Since mommy was busy over the weekend, we did not bring Darrius out and decided to bring him to Penang Butterfly Farm on that Monday… thinking that it will not be as crowded as the weekends.

We went around 2pm and the weather was indeed very nice for outing. We even brought along the beach stuff so we can pop by the beach after our visit to the farm since we have to travel along the same route. This is the first time Darrius visiting the Butterfly Farm though he has been a huge fancee of butterflies. Well, this is because his daddy is too kiam siap! :P (PiggyBeng thought the entrance fees is around RM20 a pax and has to pay for camera hence he refused to go).

It was a relief that the entrance fees has been reduced to only RM10 a pax and cameras can enter for free. The place did not change much though it has been more than 10 years since my last visit.

Darrius was of course delirious upon seeing the butterflies! Initially he was scare and dare not touch the butterflies but warmed up pretty fast and kept pointing at the butterflies or go really close to stare at them.

It was so cute to see some of the butterflies are so busy mating! We caught quite a few doing their ‘businesses’ even though it was quite windy! Amazingly they can stay very still and stable! PiggyBeng was extremely amused by this. He took lots of photos and captured them on video too. Crazy fella!

Well, it was not all about butterflies as there are some very interesting plants which I spotted within the place.

Not sure what is that cone like shaped plant called as I can’t find the label. I find it quite unique looking. Love the flowers sprouting out… so lovely.

Then saw the violet color plant which is called Tiger Whiskers. I love this plant so much that I took photo of it from all angles!

After warming up to the butterflies, Darrius was all ready to disturb them! He will go around the ‘plate’ where fruits are placed to attract the butterflies.

Darrius will go around trying to pick the butterflies by their wings after seeing some other kids were doing it.

He will try to pick and once the butterfly flies away he will laugh in delight… *so cheeky*!

We spent about 15 minutes in the auditorium watching the show which was a video recording as that was the only place with aircon… Then we came to this bridge near the exit and I discovered it has very unique decorations. If you look closely, the designs are made of Prananakan porcelain table wares to form designs of flowers, butterflies and etc…!

It sort of gave me some idea to design my future house using these items. :P

Well, besides butterflies, plants and nice wall decors, the other main attraction within the farm are these big fishes (Koi, Cat fish and etc…) which were in the pond in the middle of the farm. Darrius was so attracted by these fishes too that he kept wanted to go near.

ooh … the last time we went to a butterfly in Melaka (with Alan), there were no butterflies in there. Alan was complaining. I actually went to this one in penang for a school field trip … probably 20 something years ago (was in primary school). There is a pretty nice waterfall park next to the butterfly farm there … we had a picnic after the field trip near the waterfall.
