Learning tools for toddlers

After reading Hui Sia’s post about her son’s condition in having difficulties recognizing some alphabets and numbers, I would like to share this with everyone who is interested.

I used to get all the Nursery Rhymes karaoke VCDs and DVDs for Darrius as he loves to listen to songs. Though he has learned a lot through those but they don’t give much educational values. Not until I bought him some Sesame Street Learning series VCDs a month back. The improvement I saw is tremendous.

I got him the #1 Learning about Numbers, #2 Learning about Letters and #3 Guess that Shape and Color. From watching these few CDs (which is about 30 minutes each), I noticed he has improved so much and is able to recognize all the alphabets (be it capital letters or small letters) as well as all the numbers and shapes. He was very interested with them as the show has songs where he even tried to sing along after watching them a few times.

When I got him the #3 CD, he has been asking me a lot about colors everyday. Whenever he sees something he will go “What color is this?” or things like “What color is Darrius’s shirt?” and he can go on and on. I can see he grasped the idea well and I am so proud of him for being able to relate to many things after watching these few CDs.

Though I read to him a lot but I find his attention level is much lower as compared to watching these CDs. I personally feel that he can learn better or his absorption level increased with movements and songs. Probably I’m not a very good reader thus I can’t keep him interested for too long.

I will be on the look out for more of such educational tools to help Darrius learn more.

I agree. It had been stressful to teach Brae to recognise alphabets and numbers until I found Leapfrog Learning DVDs which I ordered online. It is quite amazing how children can associate things so easily through educational DVDs. Maybe it’s not so fun with mummy alone teaching….hahahah.
