‘Tang-yuen’ Jie (Winter Solstice Festival)

So, did any of you munch in some ‘tang-yuen’ (glutinous rice balls) today? I’ve not thought MIL brought some home to offer to our ancestors on the altar. I don’t really like eating these plain ‘tang-yuen’ as they always get stuck in my throat. I give it a miss every year… :P

Not sure if any of you noticed, tonight the moon was exceptionally round and bright though it is only the thirteen day of the Lunar month. Normally the moon appeared the roundest when it is on the sixteenth day.

Over the years I’ve heard a lot of tales and fables that associated with this particular festival but till today I still can’t figure out the actual association. The only one I think could be true is the one that my grandma told me that people in China will eat ‘tang-yuen’ during Gaw Dong Jie to celebrate the end of harvest (in olden China, most are farmers).

There are more related stories around so if you are keen, you can check it out here.
