For a good cause – The Dove Self-Esteem Fund

I was a teenage girl before and I know perfectly how it felt when I am not in those ‘popular’ groups in my school. As I was in a all girl school make it even more stressful as we tend to compete among each other in every aspect but there is always one thing that we can’t compete – beauty. It is either you have it or you don’t. Many do not think that beauty is only skin deep.

Being young and naive then, most of us thought of physical beauty is more important rather than inner beauty which many of us are lack off. Therefor, many of my peers who are not in the ‘popular’ category because they are not pretty or slim enough often feel outcast and this lead to low self esteem and caused some of them do silly things. There were cases where some even fell terribly ill.

In early 2006, Dove came out with a campaign – The Dove Self-Esteem Fund (DSEF) to address this prominent problem faced by many of the young women in the world. The DSEF was established to raise the self-esteem of girls and young women to make them feel more beautiful and confident every day.

As part of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, this global effort is designed to widen today’s stereotypical view of ‘beauty’. This is a global project where the Fund consists of a network of local country initiatives linked in strategy and direction by a global steering group. In each country, the DSEF supports a specific charitable organization to help foster self-esteem. Currently the Fund supports Uniquely ME! in the US, a partnership with Girl Scouts of the USA that helps build self-confidence in girls ages 8 to17 with educational resources and hands-on activities and Body Talk in the United Kingdom and other countries, where an educational program about body image and self-esteem in schools.

Do check out the Reality Diaries Program, a 6 weeks program that revolves around the real lives of 4 teenagers as they cope with the self-esteem problems as they shared them online. Each girl deals with a different self-esteem issue and the Diaries will reflect how the media influences their self-esteem. Each of them is unique and have their own story to tell.
