Have you seen or eaten this?
On one of my weekly groceries shopping trip to Tesco, I discovered something new which I’ve never seen before. I won’t say I’m an extremely adventurous person but if I find them interesting I will normally give them a try… if it don’t cost a lot.
The item is some new species of ‘bayam’ (Scientific name: Amaranth) also commonly known as spinach but it is purple in color. So far I’ve never seen it in the wet markets or any supermarkets. It is quite different from the regular ‘bayam’ that are sold in the markets. I find them look a bit like ‘wong dai mio’ except it does not have the sticky mucus thingy.
So, have you seen or eat this before??? I’ve cooked it and it tasted quite nice. If you want to know how the recipe, hop over here.

At a first glance, they look like flowers! Looks delicious, I guess that’s the power of having that purple color.
The leaves look a bit like holly leaves when I first saw it but
much shaper. But I really like the dark purple colour.
Purple spinach is very common leh. They are sold everywhere and quite cheap too. I heard they are very nutricious too.
This spinach is different from the common purple spinach we use for cooking for the kids.
This one is a little ’sticky’ and the surface is rough.

the red bayam is quite common, I always have this dish since hildhood and now in PIL place. It is a very good source of iron! Normally stir fry with garlic taste very good already.
This is not the common bayam we eat.
I don’t think this will taste good if just stir-fry with garlic.
