Some of my wedding gifts
I think among all the dialect groups, Hokkiens and Techeows are the two groups that are more traditional ones. They have a lot of traditional practices especially on wedding day. I do not know much until I married into a Hokkien family.
During weddings, especially the in-laws, they will give to the brides and grooms either gold jewelleries or big ang-pows (red packets) as a symbols prosperity and acceptance of the reunion into the family. My mother-in-law, some of mine and PiggyBeng’s relatives presented me with gold bracelets during the tea ceremonies which were held in two different locations.
However, I hardly wear them as it is quite unsafe to be walking around with gold jewelleries these days especially in Penang. The snatch-theives rates are still high so it’s advisable not to wear any valuables unnecessary. I kept most of them in the safe deposit box and will only take them out to wear during special occassions.
