Ready for ABC

One day (about a month back) while I was busy blogging away, Darrius who was seated next to me made hell of a noise. So to distract him I threw him some brochures (Christmas brochures from Cold Storage) I found on one corner of the table and continue with my blogging until I heard this:

Mummm-mummmm-mummmm

I look over at Darrius and he kept pointing at those pictures of food in the brohures. Excited, I flipped the brochure over and pointed at several pictures of food and he continue saying ‘mummm-mummm-mummm’. Then remembering he once knew how an apple look like so I pointed at the apples and he said “perr” his version of apple. :) So, from then onwards, I will constantly pass him those brochures and let him flip… surprisingly he stopped chewing them too! (He used to chew on anything I gave him)

Being a first time mom, I have no expectation on how soon my child can starts his first ABC but knowing my little cheeky boy can learn quite fast, I was so super kiasu (afraid to lose) and went about buying his first set of pictorial books when he was just 6-month old! Was having this hope that my boy can be a genius lar… :P I found that he’s more of a kay-poh (nossy) than a genius… hahahaha

So this is what I bought for him then….

After that day’s episode, the more I wanted to get more books for him to test his abilities and I found these during one of my shopping outing at one of the shopping complex here:

See… English wordings with Chinese wordings some more! Kiasu or not???? hehehehehe Darrius loves these books and since it’s quite light he can flip-flip and point-point. He can recognise some of the pictures pretty well, so even though there are some he is still not able to read out yet but he knew what they are and will go “eehhh-eehhh” I’m pretty proud that he has improved so much over his vocabulary in such a short time… besides able to call some of us he can even say out a few words, loud and clear! (Will update on his 14-month post)

Anyway, I guess it’s good if I can instil the love to read in Darrius at an early age but will not be over pushy, will rather just let him learn on his own pace….

HI! It’s never too early to start reading to your lil one actually! As long as he wants to ..why not? Sing the ABC song la…and point to the alphabets at the same time…I find that they suddenly see all alphabets and will start singing the song, and point point point!!! Have fun..lots and lots of it!

hey this set of books (pic #1) is good. oscar use to have one set when he is 6mths old, but i dont know where i kept it (its all hubby’s fault cos he is Mr-Keep-It-Clean). flash cards are super duper good if you do it everyday.

I’m like you too..so afraid Belle will never know her ABCs. I bought a bunch of books and flash cards (in Chinese and English) when I was at Msia and Shanghai. This girl will flip the book but still hasn’t shown any interest in reading them.

Haha…I think all of us like that lorr. We bought a lot of flash cards and picture board books for Brae too. Now, he always select books that he likes and passes the books to us to read to him. Else he will just flip the pages non-stop.

It’s never too early to read to baby, and I like to read to my kids. I still remember that Justin likes Peter and Jane book 1a a lot when he’s about 1 year old and I kept repeating the book for so many times a day (he asked me too with his sign language) until I was really sick of the book :P

    Mott,
I will just go easy and not to over do coz worried he might have fear later…but I guess it’s a good start that enjoys looking at pictures now.

    Yvonne,
hahaha… all young mommies are a little kiasu!

    Angeline,
Once Darrius is older I’ll sure use flash cards on him, just now he will chew if he sees anything small… he was chewing a ticket stub just yesterday!

    Vien,
Got to be persistent, always talk to Belle and ask her ‘What is this?’ or ‘What is that?’ to stir her interest. Maybe my Darrius is more of a kay-poh-chi so he will always go searching for the things I asked him.

    laundryamah,
Wah, Kylie can tear the hard covers ah???

    Sasha,
    It’s about time to start!
