Should I wean Darrius?

These past weeks has been tiring, besides going crazy with this blogging mania, Darrius has been cultivating a really bad habit… he needs my nen-nen to sleep! He can stay on my breasts for 2 hours for a single session! Everytime I tried to pull away he will whine then continue with a loud cry… which can be disturbing as PiggyBeng needs his 8-hour beauty sleep every night.

So, while we were driving back after dinner with PiggyBeng’s dad earlier (Darrius was nursing then and also dozed off), I asked PiggyBeng as to when I should be weaning Darrius from breastfeeding. The nurses from the hospital where I’m one of the member for their breastfeeding support group have told me to nurse Darrius till he is 2 yo but I doubt I can go on to that length. Below is the conversation between PiggyBeng and myself:

Me: See, boi-boi kau-kau (sleeping)  lioa…

PiggyBeng: He’s drinking milk ah?

Me: Yeah… he was cranky mah so nurse him sure guai-guai one. Now he must sleep with my breasts leh if not sure cry like crazy.

PiggyBeng: (Silent)

Me: So, when do you think I should wean him ah?

PiggyBeng: Aiya, I think by one you can wean him lioa… don’t have to nurse him for so long one. One year is more than enough lioa.

Me: Hmmm…..

PiggyBeng: It’s about time that daddy get nursed!

Me: huh?????

PiggyBeng: He has the boobs for a year lioa… so now is daddy’s turn!! Daddy is so deprived lioa leh!

Me: (LOL) Wahlau eh!

So, should I or should I not wean Darrius once he blow his 1st candle leh???? :|

You should go with your gut feeling when comes to weaning. I weaned Belle when she turned 10-mth old. I simply love the “our” time while nursing her and missed it tremendously. If you really wanna wean Darrius, you will need commitment and the nerve of steel. :) Be prepared for A LOT of crying.

Belle was like Darrius, she needed the boobs to fall asleep. I know how tired you’re feeling now. I’ve been thru it. Right now, Belle is 100% weaned and I have no regret. At least now the Daddy can put her to bed and I have my “ME” time now. :D

Let me know if you wanna start weaning. I gave myself 2 months to prepare for it and I’m pretty successful as I didn’t suffer much engorgement. I give you tips..hehe.

    Vien,

I know how hard it’s gonna be that was why I’m still comtemplating the idea…*sigh*
The easiest way to soothe Darrius when he’s cranky is to stuff the boobs to him… so if he kept crying my heart will go soft… :(

    laundryamah,
since I’m a SAHM, so cannot use excuses to wean Darrius off lor… no pressure mah unlike you have a biz to run. But will wait and see how things go…

I had thought that i will slowly wean Bryan when he turns 1. He is 2 weeks away from his 1 yr birthday and i am a bit sayang to start.

But i may start formula after he reached 1 year, and see if he accepts formula. Will see how it goes before deciding.

Right now, although he still needs nen-nen for bedtime, i am training hubby to put him back to sleep if he wakes up in the middle of the night. It is slowly working, and it helps me to get my beauty sleep & ME time during the evenings after Bryan had ZZzz.

I do need to attend night teleconferences from home for work purposes, so having hubby to care for Bryan definitely helps.

My opinion only. I think slowly Darrius will wean himself off your boobs, just need some time. I am a stay-at-home-mum now (For one month liao :-) ) and i think i will continue my breastfeeding journey until Anne turn 2. I know it’s not an easy job (she also need my boobs to sleeps when i am around. else she can sleep by herself!), but breastmilk is still the best. Ganbatte!!

Very subjective Q. It depends on Darrius’ need & your needs. PiggyBeng’s needs can adjust one mar ;) I weaned my girl at 7 months and that was due to low supply. Else, I would have continued bf :)

wahh after reading all the comments, now I wonder is it that difficult? I weaned my girl when she was 4 months, didn’t have any problem cause she was mix feed. Now with Vyktore hmmm..dare not think yet. My target was 6 months, so once I reach 6 months I’ll consider again probably..depends if I still need to loose weight kekeke…

wahh pity PiggyBeng lor then :P

looks like most have problems weaning hor? :|
Guess I’ll have to wait and see how things goes after our vacation or after Darrius’s 1st b’day.

Like what Vien said… need to have nerve like steel… I’m very soft hearted… maybe have to let him self wean like what dragonmummy said lor.

Also a bit sayang like shooi… it’s a special moment between us that I don’t wanna lose.

Actually Darrius can sleep on his own if I’m not around but either PiggyBeng or my mom must be the person who coax him to sleep or unless he’s super tired.

As beckysmom put it, BM is still the best! :)

Immomsdaugther, my poor PiggyBeng felt a bit left out wor…

    Sasha, yeah… he needs nen-nen too…hehe

2 angels, you are right ah! LOL

    Angie Q, that’s my nutty hubby…heheh

Well, actually another reason I felt so sayang is the weight thingy… it’s true bfg helps me lose lots of weight and I can still chompped all the chocolate and ice-cream and still don’t put on much weight… so jazzmint, you are right ah… :P
