This Crab is making me droooooool again!
While I was going over some old photos, those we took on the pepper crabs caught my eyes…again… and these photos never failed to make me drool….
Crabs can be cooked in many styles but nothing can beat this particular style which is my all time favorite…. PEPPER! PiggyBeng prefers the chilli style but I don’t really fancy the overdose of tomato ketchup so he has been rather accommodating when I have craving for crabs. There was once he even ‘ta-pau’ (packed) for me when he was on transit in Singapore. Ok… my PiggyBeng can be so sweet sometimes…. but it must be about food… if ask him to get HRC T-shirt he will turn on deaf ears… hehehe
Both of us used to live in Singapore and pepper crabs is almost an all time favorite among the dwellers there. What really make us ‘gian’ (craving in Hokkien) for is the size of the crabs… it is so huge that both of us have a hard time finishing the entire crab! Usually the seafood restaurants in Singapore prefers to use Sri Lankan crab as they are more meaty and sweeter and of course the size… Size do matter ok!
I must comment a wee bit on the taste… I found that the way they cooked it in Singapore is so different as compared to those cooked here… either in Penang or KL. Firstly, the crabs are sooooo mini; secondly, it is always so watery; thirdly, it lack the butter fragrance and lastly, the black pepper used is just so ‘not right’.
Before I met PiggyBeng, I used to go feasting with one of my gf who also love to go pigging out with me and pepper crabs is one of our favorite too (you know who you are *wink*) We have been to a few places and there is this particular restaurant in East Coast (East Coast Park – near Marine Parade) that served really good pepper crabs but can cost as much as SGD$60 for just ONE CRAB. My gf found another place (smaller crabs and cheaper) near Lavendar MRT but I have yet to try it out… will do that on our next trip to the southern island.
Just look at the pincer (2nd photo)…. almost filled the whole dessert plate!! Imagine the juicy and succulent meat inside………………oooooooohhhhhhhh… I’m droooling!!!
